Judge Jules Interview
We recently caught up with Judge Jules in the studio working hard on the new tracks for the Hi-Gate album. NIDJ spoke to him on the phone. This is how it went.
nidj
Now that the hectic summer season's over, have things quietened down for you at all, with a bit more time to relax?
Jules
Not really I am already working on my next records, I have gigs up and down the country, I work closely with Ministry of Sound on their albums as well. I have also got a tour of Australia coming up.
nidj
What was it like out in Ibiza and other places abroad this year? Do you ever tire of the non-stop travelling around in the summer?
Jules
Ibiza is insane and mind-blowing.
nidj
Do your family ever travel with you when you go abroad, or do you leave them back here at home?
Jules
When they get a chance and it is worth their while. Amanda came over to me this Summer in Ibza and she was able to do live performances of her record as well which meant we were both able to work and enjoy it.
nidj
On your worldwide travels, you must have seen a huge variety of places. What's the strangest or most unusual place you've ever played a gig in?
Jules
At the moment my favourite UK club is Gatecrasher and then the Red Box In Ireland.
nidj
And around the world there will have been all sorts of different crowds..have you found that dance music really *is* universal, or have you ever found that your sound hasn't really gone down in a certain place?
Jules
Very definitely universal. In the past I had to tailor my sound to the country but now I find it is the universal soundtrack to most clubs around the world.
nidj
Do you ever tailor your sets in advance according to the venue you're going to be playing in, or do you prefer to "play it by ear"?
Jules
Not so much for venue but for set length and times.
nidj
What's the smallest audience you've ever played to?
Jules
Virtually nobody as I am sure all DJs have experienced this, it is part of a DJ's coming to age.
nidj
Perhaps more recently you've become well known not only for your DJing but also for your production, with tracks that have really turned into anthems like Pitchin' and Voices. Has the story actually been like it seems - that DJing has only recently led into production - or have you had interests in production for a longer time?
Jules
Always been making records.
nidj
Internet webcasting is becoming ever more common, with big names like Gatecrasher getting in on the action. Do you think that's a good thing, or do you think it's just a gimmick and that we might even be in danger of creating a new generation of "armchair clubbers" who rarely experience the real thing?
Jules
I am currently sitting on the fence with that one. But is it definitely the future.
nidj
Thanks Jules for your time.
Jules
Cheers guys. Bye.
